Welcome to the on-line version of the Searchin' for Shakes garage/psych
compilation and fanzine database!
|
| |
The Nuggets album in 1972 was
the first to mine the rich vein
of overlooked beat, garage and
psychedelic rock released from
1964-1970. Since then, many
hundreds of compilations ("comps")
have followed, as collectors
scoured the planet for every
obscure single and album track
worthy of an expanded audience.
|
|
This database provides track lists for all of these comps, as well as
other pertinent information - where the bands were from, what label
the songs originally appeared on, etc. Initial inspiration came from
David Walter's book, "Children of Nuggets," but we've expanded our
scope to include comps originally released in the 60s, and comps
focusing on modern bands that are heavily influenced by mid to late 60s
sounds. And our partnership with Ugly Things magazine allows us to make
their large archive of compilation reviews, dating back to 1983, available
here as well! Finally, the site now includes a fanzine search page.
|
Searchin' for Shakes is still available in its initial incarnation, as a Microsoft Access 2000 database, if you prefer to use it as a desktop application.
It can be downloaded from the Trans-World '60s Punk website.

We're still looking for information on a number of comps; if you think you
can help, please check out our Track Lists Wanted page. Send additions
and corrections to Menachem Turchick. Here's a list of our previous
contributors!
